1) Storytelling: Engaging Kids with "Mission-Based Narratives"
When designing "The Secret Messenger of Old Street Creek," I intentionally structured the protagonist's actions as "missions" a child can understand. Instead of preaching with an adult tone, the story breaks down the sense of crisis into achievable steps through small, sequential goals.
- Spot the Anomaly: The water looks different, smells different, and friends' homes are disappearing.
- Confirm Clues: Seek out the "best observer" (e.g., a magpie or egret) to assess the situation.
- Team Up: Different characters handle different tasks (patrolling, recording, messaging, guiding).
- Deliver the Message: Send an SOS to humans in a way kids can comprehend.
- Call to Action: The ending connects to reality, showing what children and families can actually do.
