R70 Locomotive Preservation Project
In the memories of many, trains are more than just a means of transport; they are a medium that "connects people." As time passes, train bodies age and spaces sit idle, making memories prone to being sealed away as static exhibits. This project adopts an "Adaptive Reuse" strategy: respecting the original appearance and material constraints, we complete interior refurbishments and build a guided tour system, transforming R70 into a cultural space on campus that can be used, taught, and continuously maintained.
Why Preserve R70?
- Public Nature of Memory: Trains carry the bittersweet routines of daily life. Preservation isn't just nostalgia; it's keeping public memory in a discussable position.
- Educational Accessibility: Allowing students to understand "heritage conservation" and "the evolution of the technological era" through real objects, rather than just imagining them from textbooks.
- Cross-Era Inheritance: Through regeneration and adaptive reuse, transforming history into operational learning resources for the contemporary era.
How We Do It: From "Exhibition" to "Operational Space"
1) Current Status Inventory and Risk Grading
The first step isn't renovation, but clarifying "what can be moved and what cannot." Focusing on the exterior, interior, visible mechanical parts, nameplates, and identifiable components, we created an inventory and risk grading: Structure and safety first (non-negotiable), appearance and historical features second (preserve as much as possible), user comfort and tour experience last (iterative).
2) Design Principles: Pragmatic, Reversible, Maintainable
- Minimum Intervention: Prioritize cleaning, patching, and conditioning. Avoid dismantling or replacing if repair is possible.
- Reversible Construction: New additions use detachable fixtures to reduce future maintenance or re-restoration costs.
- Maintainability: Materials, coatings, and hardware are chosen based on "easy to acquire and replace" to avoid one-off solutions.
- Safety and Circulation: Entrances, handrails, anti-slip measures, and lighting are treated as hard specifications for long-term operation.
3) Interior Renovation: Retaining "Vintage Feel", Adding "Usability"
The GREEMA team focused on the interior, revitalizing the warmth and vitality of the R70 locomotive. We prioritized "organizing and conditioning," focusing on actionable items that can be maintained long-term:
- Seating & Activity Areas: Retaining the original seating vocabulary while adding usable tabletop/reading setups (using modular boards for easy replacement).
- Lighting & Visual Comfort: Aiming for uniform, low-glare lighting while preserving the historical texture (avoiding overly commercial lighting).
- Flooring & Maintenance: Prioritizing repairs of broken, loose, dusty, and odorous areas; selecting wear-resistant, easy-to-clean surface materials.
- Curtains & Sunshades: Continuing the carriage's atmosphere, mitigating backlighting and afternoon sun to enhance dwell time.
- Nameplates & Details: Preserving nameplates, numbers, and historical markers as "evidence of the era," supplementing their educational value with protective and explanatory plaques.
4) Guided Tours & Teaching: Replacing "Just Watching" with "Actionable Operation"
To ensure preservation goes beyond just taking photos, we transformed the guided tour into an "educational and productive workflow":
- QR Tour Pages: Key components (locomotive, carriage, nameplates) are equipped with QR codes linking to one-page guides (timelines, parts encyclopedias, restoration logs).
- Modular Curriculum: Designing 30/60/90-minute versions for campus tours, general education classes, and club activities.
- Student Participation Mechanisms: Engaging students genuinely through three tracks: oral history collection, maintenance logging, and volunteer guiding.
